PUMP IT UP: Kids in T-shirts, men in uniform and just regular runners in more comfortable attire run through the Bayshore Drive area of Barnegat during the 19th annual Stop, Drop and Run event on Sept. 3.

Nearly 300 runners of various ages participated in the Barnegat Township Volunteer Fire Co.’s 19th annual Stop Drop and Run on Sept. 3. The event, featuring a 5K and 10K, began and ended at the township dock, sending runners on a winding course over bayfront and lagoon areas off Bayshore Drive.

In the 5K run, 38-year-old Meaghan Drapkin of Brick Township crossed the finish line first with a 19:38.7 time. But then the next four finishers were from Barnegat Township: Lucas Harrer, 15 (20:49.9), Peter Cirina, 35 (21:25.9), Tyler Finkle, 16 (21:36.4), and Logan Ryan, 15 (21:38.1)

The winner of the 10-K event, Marquis Cox, 28, of Mount Laurel, crossed the line at 39:25.9. Finishing second was Yale Yang, 49, of Martinsville, with a time of 41:13.9. The best finisher from Barnegat was 33-year-old Chad Dennes, who recorded a time of 45.51.8.

R.J. Shields, event coordinator, said proceeds from the registration fees will help pay for equipment, training programs, maintenance expenses and facility upkeep.

“It’s good to be getting back to normal,” he said. “The pandemic hurt us in 2020, but we did better last year and now we’re getting our usual turnout. We were very happy with the weather. The conditions were just right.”
