On Sunday, June 5, at 7:56 a.m., King County deputies responded to Vashon’s Subway restaurant for a report of vandalism on its roof.

The owner of the business, Vinnie Dhir, told deputies and The Beachcomber that someone had damaged a piece of the roof’s flooring, which had caused extensive leaks into the restaurant downstairs. Ceiling tiles and wallpaper had been soaked and ruined.

Graffiti was also painted on the roof, near the place where a sharp object had sliced open the roof’s waterproof membrane. The graffiti had a distinctive tag that had also been used, a couple of months prior, in graffiti in the restaurant’s bathroom, as well as the building next door to Subway, Dhir said.

The vandalism was dispiriting to Dhir.

“Needless to say, we have had several difficult years,” Dhir said, adding that he had recently spent $5,000 for repairs to his restaurant’s air-conditioner and cooler.

Dhir and his wife bought the business just a month or so before the start of COVID, and have only in the past few months been seeing a greater uptick in business at the restaurant.

The roof has been repaired by the building’s landlord, he said, but he is still unsure if insurance will completely pay for the cost. He said he hoped that islanders could help identify the very “un-Vashon-like” culprit of the crime.

A spokesman for the sheriff’s office said there is no suspect information for the incident at this time.

A Sea Mar executive said Sea Mar’s intention also included plans to build a new clinic, expand services and also explore the possibility of building affordable housing on Vashon as well.

In an email to families, Superintendent Slade McSheehy said that “school leaders are taking this personnel matter extremely seriously.”

The clinics will take place at Vashon High School. Islanders will also have the opportunity to get a flu shot, at the same time.
